Eco Dollar
RMIT University Industrial Design Bachelor Project
Writers and social commentators are often heard blaming the economic greed of designers or “evil corporations” for all the worlds’ environmental problems, and while there maybe elements of truth in these statements, it seems these writers are quick to forget the rules on which economic growth is base. We still live in a free market economy and the principles of “supply and demand” donates that consumers are the ones that ultimately have the most power of influence - designers and corporations would not be able to “supply” goods and services that there was no consumer “demand” for. The Eco Dollar Concept looks at ways of increasing consumer power and awareness of the environmental impacts of their daily consumption, so that informed and unbiased decisions can be made. Looking at the benefits and potential for a market driven push towards more sustainable products that could come from a well-regulated and publicly available system of environmental accounting.
